Energy scams unmasked

Sadly, there are fraudsters out there who use phone calls, text messages, emails and websites to steal personal information and money from good people. Scammers often disguise themselves as organizations you trust. They claim to represent an organization you do business with and can even make the phone number look real on your caller ID; this is called spoofing. Websites and emails can also be disguised to look legit and trick consumers into clicking on harmful links.

The most common utility scam claims your bill is past due and threatens to disconnect your service if payment isn't received immediately. Another claims you've overpaid your bill and will receive a refund. Some misleading websites take you to a third-party payment site and will charge you a fee to make your utility payment for you.
