Getting to know EVs and how they impact the grid and your electric service

We know EVs are not for everyone, and we don't expect transportation to change overnight, but as we forecast energy use and strategically plan for the future, we have a responsibility to consider how EV charging will impact the electric system and service to our members.

Consumer interest in EVs is growing. Polk-Burnett provides energy-related information to help our members make informed decisions about EVs, and we work with members to charge EVs in the most efficient and reliable way.

Charging an electric vehicle uses a large amount of electricity and we care about when the vehicle is drawing power. It is best to charge EVs overnight, when overall demand for electricity goes down and the wholesale rice for power is lower. By participating in off-peak charging programs, co-op members can help control the demand your EV is placing on the grid. This helps hold electric costs down for all members.

Polk-Burnett purchased a 2022 Ford-F-150 Lightning to help us gain insights into how EVs operate and what electric infrastructure is needed to support them. The all-electric Lightning is the base model designed for daily work throughout our service territory. It has a rated range of 230 miles.

Polk-Burnett offers a Level 3 fast charger for public use at Marketplace Foods on Hwy. 8 in St. Croix Falls. The charging station provides about 150 miles of battery range for every hour the vehicle is plugged in. It operates with a credit card or ZEF Energy app for $0.25/kWh. The charger was installed with a rebate from Dairyland Power Cooperative to help alleviate range anxiety in rural areas served by co-ops. To be clear, EV owners pay for fast charging, not Polk-Burnett members.

Charger rebates and off-peak rates are available for members who charge overnight, when grid demand and cost are lower.
