If you are investing in new lights, go the LED route!

LEDs win because of efficiency, longevity and cost of operation. Also, they are available in many styles. Unlike incandescent bulbs which generate most of their energy in heat, LEDs are cool to the touch, which indicates greater energy efficiency. LEDs are made with epoxy lenses, not glass and are therefore much more durable.

Before you deck the halls, please keep safety top of mind with these tips from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI):

  1. Outdoor electrical lights and decorations should be plugged into circuit s protected by Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCls).
  2. Inspect all lights, decorations and extension cords for damage before using.
  3. Turn off electrical decorations before leaving home or going to sleep.
  4. Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights together.
  5. Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many decorations or electrical devices. They can overheat and cause a fire.
  6. Water your Christmas tree daily.
  7. Keep all decorations at least three feet away away from heating equipment.
  8. Use a wooden or fiberglass ladder when hanging lights outdoors and look up for power lines.
  9. Never drape anything over a light bulb or lamp shade.
  10. Consider using battery-operated candles in place of traditional candles.
  11. If you do use a traditional candle, never leave an open flame unattended. Keep burning candles within sight.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 860 home fires caused by holiday decorations occur each year. An additional 210 home fires are caused by Christmas trees per year.

Please be safe and have a happy holiday season!
